Dhanteras 2026 (6 November): What to Buy Besides Gold, and Why a Broom Isn’t a Joke

Every Dhanteras, India runs the same ad.

A jeweller’s hoarding. A smiling family. A gold coin glowing like a small sun. And somewhere in the corner, in very small type, the price per gram.

It works, too. CAIT estimated that gold and jewellery made up around a tenth of all Diwali trade last year. But Dhanteras was never only about gold. It was about inviting prosperity in, and that idea can be expressed at many price points.

In short: Dhanteras 2026 falls on Friday, 6 November. People traditionally buy gold, silver, brass or steel utensils, a new broom, and diyas to light the evening. If gold isn’t in the budget, buy something metal for the kitchen, a new broom, or a diya you’ll light for the next three nights. The symbolism matters more than the carat.

When is Dhanteras in 2026?

Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026, two days before Lakshmi Puja on Sunday, 8 November. It marks the start of the five days of Diwali. Check your local panchang for the exact muhurat in your city, as timings vary.

What do people traditionally buy on Dhanteras?

  • Gold and silver. Coins, jewellery, small idols. The most visible tradition, and also the most expensive.
  • Metal utensils. Brass, copper and steel vessels, often a new pot or thali for the kitchen. The idea is that something new and shining enters the house.
  • A broom. Many families buy a new jhadu on Dhanteras. It stands for sweeping out poverty and bad luck. It’s also the cheapest auspicious purchase in India, which I find quietly wonderful.
  • Diyas and lamps. Many homes light a lamp on Dhanteras evening facing south, as an offering for the well-being of the family.
  • Something new for the home. These days that includes electronics and appliances too, for better or worse.

What can you buy on Dhanteras if gold is too expensive?

Here’s my honest list, in rising order of price:

  1. A new broom. Under ₹100, deeply auspicious, and you’ll actually use it.
  2. A brass or copper diya. Metal and light in one purchase.
  3. A steel or brass utensil for the kitchen.
  4. A diya to light from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj. Clay or brass if you’re buying on the day itself. If you’d like a glass one, like our Chambu Modak Diya, order it a few days earlier, since some families avoid buying glass on Dhanteras.
  5. A silver coin, if you want to keep the tradition alive on a smaller budget.

None of these will make a jeweller’s hoarding. All of them carry the same meaning.

Dhanteras gift ideas for family and friends

Dhanteras is also a good day to gift, especially to people you’ll visit over Diwali.

  • For your parents: a brass urli with floating candles for their entrance.
  • For a new homeowner: a diya and a small hamper for their first Diwali in that house. First Diwalis matter.
  • For your team: something small and bright to take home before the long weekend.
  • For yourself: honestly, the broom.

My opinion, since you asked

I like Dhanteras because it’s the only festival that openly admits we want money, and then asks us to welcome it with something as humble as a broom.

There’s a lesson there for all of us who run small businesses. Prosperity isn’t only what you buy. It’s what you sweep out, what you light and what you choose to bring in.

So buy something new this Dhanteras. Just make sure it’s something you’ll use.

Our Diwali Apno Wali collection has a few things that would happily come home with you on the 6th.
